As COVID-19 continues to take its toll on the country, Louisiana is continuing to work to find new ways to assist its residents during this time of crisis. Just recently the state has launched a new emergency rental assistance program.
The Louisiana Housing Corporation has partnered with the state’s Office of Community Development to create the Louisiana Emergency Assistance Program which will provide assistance to renters who have been financially affected by COVID-19. There will be $24 million of total funding available to provide assistance, with $7 million being distributed during the first round of disbursements.
Renters who may be struggling to afford rent and individuals who are facing possible eviction are encouraged to apply. The assistance provides for three months of rental assistance moving forward and/or three months of assistance in paying past due rent.
The program is open to those who are facing financial hardship due to the pandemic who are at or below 30% of the Area Median Income. The program’s income eligibility requirements can also be found here. Residents who currently reside in Public Housing, or who are already receiving rental assistance will not be eligible for the program.
Applicants will be served on a first come first serve basis, and the applications can be filled out at https://www.lhc.la.gov/larenthelp.
